Geography
The study of geography can be dull--unless it is made to come alive by
knowledge of what happenned where, and to whom. The greatest way to
study geography is to travel.

Me on the Map ~
Usually ships in 24 hours
Joan Sweeney, et al / Hardcover / Published 1996
Ages 5-8. A small girl introduces the concept of maps, beginning in her own
room, then reaching further out to her house, street, town, country, and
the globe, and back again, step by step, to herself at home. It's a game
kids love to play. The collagelike illustrations show each place and then
the child pointing to a diagram of that scene. We see her in her room, then
she makes a crayon picture, a map of that room. Then we see her making a
map of her house and her street. For her town, country, and globe, there's
a scenic painting, and then we see her pointing to a map and where she is
on it. This book is a frequently requested bedtime story in our house. Moreover,
it's a great introduction to the concept of place.

Mapping
the World by Heart, Lite Version
-
David J. Smith / Unknown Binding / Published 1992
-
Ages 8-99. This system is a must have, and well worth the cost!
Laura Berquist wrote, "The text comes with a video that illustrates
the program, and it is written by a teacher who has been using it for 15
years. The aim of the program is to be able to make detailed world
mas from memory. This is achieved in smll units with daily repetition."
By the end of the year, the students will be able to create an entire
world map by memory. What a great resource to use for the remainder
of a lifetime! Third grade is the earliest that we recommend using this course.
Please order this book far in advance as it can sometimes takes awhile to
get, but it's well worth the wait.
