Geography

Geography is one of those easy-to-neglect subjects, but it's so important for the study of history and relationships between events and cultures.  It has actually become one of our favorite subjects through the resources below.

This great little book makes a wonderful introduction to the idea of geography for young children.  It starts with a map of the main characters room and goes step by step up to the entire world.  This is a favorite in our house, and the older kids still like it so much that they listen in when I read it to the youngest children!

This isn't cheap, it is worth the price, but we wish it had more than it does.  If that sounds contradictory, let me explain.  It comes with a wonderful set of maps and special map-making paper.  It includes a great method for helping children to learn the geography of the whole world, as the name suggests.  However, what it's lacking is ideas for how to actually memorize the geography of the world.  My husband has been using a rhythmical recitation to make it easier to memorize, and so far they have done Europe and much of America to go along with our history studies.

This book is used in the Mother of Divine Grace American Literature and History course.  The maps follow westward expansion, making it a handy tool to go along with the study of American history.
