Housekeeping & Organization

A house full of Legos, experiments, and the busy life of a homeschooler all make the need for organization that much more important, but perfectionism just increases stress.  These books are very different, but they are my handbooks for keeping life in order.

This is the book by the Flylady.  You can get lots of her wonderful wisdom from Flylady.net as well, but in this book she lays out her system for getting your home organized using "baby steps" to change habits instead of trying to do everything at once.

This is my other handbook for the organized life.  His system is quite simple but way beyond common sense.  The heart of the program is getting everything out of your head and into a "trusted system," whether that's a list on a legal pad or a PDA, leaving you free to concentrate on taking the next action and actually keeping all the balls in the air in a world where the to do list never really comes to an end--but using his system, that's okay.

In A Mother's Rule of Life, Mrs. Pierlot, a fellow Catholic homeschooler, creates a monastic-type rule intended for a busy mom.  She orients everything around 5 P's:
  • Prayer
  • Person
  • Partner
  • Parent
  • Provider
These are the different jobs or relationships, and she provides a way to account for all of them in daily life.
