Magazines

There's nothing like a good periodical to keep you going and give you new ideas now and then.  Below are a few that I highly recommend.

Canticle Magazine - This beautiful magazine is an inspiration for Catholic women.  It is thoroughly orthodox and includes examples of lives well-lead, as well as articles that remind me that the daily struggles through which I live are part of the common experience of being a wife and mother.

Home Education Magazine - Although it definitely leans towards unschooling, this magazine includes lots of good ideas.  There's a list of would-be penpals in the back of each issue.

The Link - This is a national homeschooling newspaper filled with tremendously substantial articles from well-known writers and speakers in the homeschooling arena.  I was very impressed by this newspaper. The issue which I was just asked to review had many articles that I found inspirational as a homeschooling mother.  There is lots of advertising, but it's well worth it because the advertising pays for the newspaper, making it free to you and me!  There's no religious affiliation to the newspaper and, somewhat like Home Education Magazine, there's certainly a place for unschoolers, but unschoolers are by no means the only types of homeschooling families writing.  There was an article by a recent homeschool graduate, an article by Mary Hood (the author of The Relaxed Homeschooler and several other books) and my favorite--an article by Marc Porter Zasada about the problem of "universal princedom" among the youth.  Not only did he make many stupendous points, but it was beautifully written as well.  In fact, the quality of writing was very high throughout the newspaper.  Several articles were so good that I reread them aloud to my husband.  A couple sparked interesting discussions among friends.  Since the newspaper is free, there's no reason not to get it.  I suspect this will become one of a very few periodicals for which life stops when it arrives at our house.

Magnificat - This periodical includes the readings from Mass, the Liturgy of the Hours, biographies of the saints, and lots of inspiration.
