Reading and Writing
Once a child has learned to read well, he can learn anything else by reading.
Once he has learned to write well, he can explain anything he has read
and anything he can imagine. No skills compare in importance
to these, yet excellent writing has become a rarity. As homeschoolers,
we have the opportunity to equip our children to be the leaders of tomorrow,
and teaching them to read critically and write with precision is of the greatest
importance in working towards that endeavor.

Bob Books
by Bobby Lynn Maslen
Bob Books are a favorite of ours. These simple black and white books have
charming illustrations and fun stories. They are very appealing to most children.
I have our early readers choose and read me a Bob book each day.

This book uses a simple, phonetic approach to reading. It is one of

Arithmetic, and Strong Start in Language. Ruth Beechick demystifies
the methods for teaching young children. Her ideas tend to agree with
those of Charlotte Mason to a large extent.

Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
~ Usually ships in 24 hours
Siegfried Engelmann, et al / Paperback / Published 1986
This book has recieved universal rave reviews, both from Laura Bergquist
and from many of its users, as you will see if you read more about it. One
mother of nine described it as the most painless method she has seen of learning
to read. However, my own experience has been that it can be hard
for a child to transfer reading ability from this to real books.

The Writing Road to Reading : The Spalding Method
of Phonics for Teaching Speech, Writing and Reading/Book and Record
~ Usually ships in 24 hours
Romalda Bishop Spalding, Walter T. Spalding / Paperback / 1990
This is another great book for teaching children to read. It can be used
for many years as a spelling book as well. Laura Berquist recommends using
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons for the first 40 lessons,
and then switching to this text. Some people love it, while others find it
too cumbersome to use. The supplement below makes this system easier
to use. We use this book, and I am quite impressed with it all by itself.
Take a look in the articles section for my own notes on how to use this
book.

Explode the Code Workbooks
by Nancy Hall
Although we haven't used these, I have seen them used by friends to great
effect. They are simple, fun to use, and easy for a child to use on his own
fairly quickly. They include lots of review for each sound.
