Religion
The Catholic faith is best learned through a sacramental life of prayer
and good works. Such a life is best understood by learning correct
doctrine as taught by the Magisterium of the Church.

The Baltimore Catechism, Books I, II, and III
Someone once explained that the Baltimore Catechism is nothing but St. Thomas
Aquinas explained for children. These books, unlike some more modern
children's catechisms, clearly define the Sacraments, sin, grace, the Creed,
and many other things that are essential to the Catholic Faith. They
use a helpful question and answer format (not too different from St. Thomas
Aquinas) and each chapter ends with a series of comprehension questions.
I strongly believe that anyone who has read and thoroughly understood
the contents of these books will not leave the Church.

Couples
in Love: Straight Talk on Dating, Respect, Commitment, Marriage, and
Sexuality
by Father John Waiss
Father John Waiss asked me to review this book, and I was glad to have the
opportunity to read it. This is a fantastic book for teenagers and
young adults who need to hear what the Church really teaches about, well,
everything the title mentions. He does this in the form of a dialogue between
a priest, a young Catholic woman who recently returned to the faith, and
her boyfriend who was raised Jewish. I found the dialogue upbeat and
interesting. The thing I liked most was the fact that the boyfriend, who
largely opposed what the priest had to say, was definitely not a straw man.
He made strong arguments for various topics so commonly found in
modern society, yet the truth always seemed more convincing. My one
caution is this: I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a young homeschooled
teenager because some topics mentioned may be beyond what they would already
be thinking about. Nevertheless, I would definitely want my children
to read this before they head off to college, and I suspect that anyone who
has spent time in a high school has probably encountered every one of these
topics. |

Faith and Life
This wonderful series is published by Ignatius Press. It is in complete accord
with the Magisterium, includes questions that are very similar to those in
the Baltimore Catechism, and each chapter contains a beautiful work of art.
We read a chapter aloud at breakfast and then discuss it together.
Not only is it doctrinally correct, it also inspires a love for Christ
and His Church.

Father
McBride's Teen Catechism(Student Text) : Based on the Catechism of the Catholic
Church ~ Ships in 2-3 days
Alfred A. McBride / Paperback / Published 1996
This wonderful resource not only mirrors the Catechism, but Fr. McBride also
wrote the questions and answers in the same form the St. Thomas Aquinas used,
which is extremely clear and useful. It covers topics such as original
sin, the dual nature of Jesus Christ, the Ten Commandments, the Holy Mass,
and the natures of marriage, family, and the priesthood. Interspersed
with the questions and answers are reflections from the lives of saints and
popes. This is an excellent text that most teens will truly enjoy
studying.

Imitation

This book has been the handbook of countless canonized saints for hundreds
of years. This great spiritual classic becomes accessible somewhere
between 7th grade and high school. |

Interior Castle
by St. Teresa of Avila, E. Allison
Peers (Translator) (Paperback)
Average Customer Review:
This wonderful book is St. Teresa's explanation of the different states of
the life of the soul. She compares the soul to a castle containing
different mansions within. Her straight-forward tone and admonitions
should definitely be read. High school to adult.

Philothea,
or an Introduction to the Devout Life
by St. Francis De Sales, et
al (Paperback - October 1994)
Average Customer Review:
Usually ships in 2-3 days
This book is a treasure. It is a compilation of the letters of spiritual
direction written by St. Francis de Sales to a married woman named Philothea
(meaning love of God). I would recommend it for the latter part of
high school and for adults. |

This is a good solid book of prayers for Catholic children from pre-school
through about 5th grade. It includes a listing of the mysteries of
the rosary, a short explanation of prayers and, in addition to the prayers
we all know it has a number of prayers especially applicable to children.
The illustrations are also nice. |
