Spiritual Works for Mom and Dad

Homeschooling is strenuous.  It means that breaks are rare for most parents.  It's worth it, but it can't be done with an empty spiritual tank.  Here are some books to fill the tank.  I'm resisting the tendency to include every good spiritual work with difficulty.  If you notice a Carmelite theme, well, it's because I think no one understands how to pray like the Carmelites!  You can rest assured that every book here is in complete accord with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

This wonderful book explains the great mystery of the Mass as well as the fact that it led Scott Hahn to his conversion.  His explanation of the Mass, which we so easily take for granted, is stunning!

This book is amazing.  Ralph Martin takes the works of many doctors of the Church and uses them to explain union with God, which is our final end, whether it begins here on Earth or (hopefully) in Heaven.

This is the easiest to read and clearest synthesis of the works of the great Carmelite saints (St. Teresa, St. John of  the Cross, St. Therese, and St. Edith Stein) to be found anywhere.

Just in case you don't already have one of these ready at your fingertips for when a doctrinal question arises, here it is.  If you really want to fill your spiritual tank, consider starting a group at your parish to read through the Catechism and discuss it together.  Include your teens.

There is no pre-Vatican II Church and post-Vatican II Church.  There's just the one, holy, catholic, apostolic Church.  In this book, our holy father details what the Mass is at its core and how it should be offered.

Why am I including a mere novel on this page?  Because this novel and all the novels by Michael O'Brien actually lead the reader to holiness!  This one is the story of the life of a native Canadian artist who lives a life of dire poverty and injustice but deep union with Our Lord.  The theme is poverty of spirit.
